Manganese or iron phosphating chemicals
Manganese phosphating process for the treatment of iron & steel surfaces to reduce wear during running-in operations.
Iron Phosphate solution.
Manganese Phosphating is a process whereby manganese phosphate is coated over metal parts to confer superior corrosion resistance and to improve their sliding properties. Invariably this is carried out by immersion in a range of manganese phosphate chemicals in specific concentrations, at specific temperatures, to provide the desired crystalline structure on the surface.
Iron Phosphating on the other hand, is a process to apply a stable, inert coating that protects the surface by preventing the spread of any corrosion caused by surface damage, and also provides a surface with excellent adhesion for paints, including powder coatings. Application can be by dip, spray or wiping, to provide the required thickness for the project in question. As a finish it does not provide the larger crystalline structure of manganese phosphating chemicals, that can hold a film of oil within the lattice structure.
The process lines for both of these applications can vary depending on desired results but can be summarised as follows.
For manganese phosphating: degreasing, rinsing, surface activation, phosphating, rinsing and lubricating.
For iron phosphating: degreasing, rinsing, phosphating, rinsing, passivating and drying.
The degreasing and phosphating are carried out at specific temperatures and the rinsing at ambient temperatures or similar temperatures to the preceding operations.
Where materials are to be subjected to extreme environmental exposure, a third option is used, zinc phosphating. This is often specified for military applications as well as the automotive and transport industries. It is also used for instances where the final paint finish is to be very thin, or a simple one coat finish, and the components are to be exposed to the weather.
In all these cases, the conversion of the surface to a metallic phosphate provides the component with additional longevity and corrosion protection.
